Achieving biodiversity and beauty with AquaFlora ecosystems

WORKS OF NATURALIZATION OF THE FALGAR POND

  • Date: 2014

  • Client: Hamburg City Council

  • Location: Hamburg, Germany

Problems

This lake in the district of Schnelsen, Hamburg, suffered an overpopulation of geese and swans. This fact provoked an absence of biodiversity during a big period of time.

Solutions

300 m2 of AquaFlora Floating Wetlands where installed and distributed in different spaces of the lake to promote diversification of habitats, more biodiversity and opportunities for wildlife in the area.

Due to tackle the challenge situation of the overpopulation of birds, we protected the wetlands with gabion panels to ensure a well grow of the vegetation.

Results

The use of good developed pre-planted mats and no single plants was the key point to have a successful establishment of the vegetation.

Over the time, thanks to the gabion protection against birds and the developed pre-planted mat the vegetation had an excellent grow with colourful flowering providing aesthetics aspects to the area and improving the water quality.
